Even a beautiful snowy day like today doesn’t stop the unending flow of malicious stupidity of the music business. The Music Publishers Association asserts that it is illegal to publish lyrics and guitar tabature on the Web. They even want people who do so to be put in jail! David Israelite is the head moron of this group, saying “Unauthorised use of lyrics and tablature deprives the songwriter of the ability to make a living, and is no different than stealing.” Misused comma aside, this quote is so foolish that it amazes me that any person can say it with a straight face.
People create music and art to communicate and entertain. Musicians are performers and creators of art. Copying a piece of art does not detract from the value of that art. In fact it adds value. Hell, the only reason why we have things like the “surrealist movement” and the “baroque period” is because of artists copying the styles of other artists.
If some kid likes how I play Depressing Rock Song and wants to figure it out and post tab on the Web, that’s great. I think someone already did, actually. The lyrics are already out there too. If they want to see me play it, they can pay a couple of bucks and go see us at The Living Room next Tuesday or KC’s tap in Pawtucket next Thursday. Otherwise, I don’t feel I’ve been cheated out of any money because someone liked my stuff enough to copy it!
