I know that guy…

Looking around at craigslist, I found a posting that a Dream Theater cover band Glass Prison was looking for a singer. In looking at their band lineup, they list their bassist as Erik McFearsome.

Which led me to search around for Luke’s brother Erik MacPherson to see if that was him. Then I found The Dan Lawson Band, where Erik is/was the bassist recently. Yeah, of course he likes Mesa Boogie!

Which then led me to search for Luke MacPherson, finding only this link for Woonsocket High faculty.

I miss ya, Luke man! And, how the hell can a person have only ONE LINK on the Internet about them?

Best Buy FTW?

I think I’ve changed my mind about Best Buy. They’ve announced that they will give a $50 gift card to customers who bought an HD-DVD player before February 23. They’ll also trade-in your HD-DVD player — even if you did not purchase it at Best Buy. They’ll give us $101 for our HD-A35 and the two included movies, if we choose.

$151 is a decent step. And if they’ll do a little better by those customers who *did* buy directly from them and still have a receipt, I’ll definitely consider shopping with them more often.

It is certainly better than the Heisman I got from Toshiba.

Joe vs. Toshiba - 5

Received a call back from Toshiba! Albeit a non-helpful call…

Tim was a friendly gentleman who claimed to be in the “same boat” as me, purchasing an HD-A30 just after Christmas. He claimed that Toshiba has no plans to compensate those folks who purchased HD-DVD players recently, nor do they have any plans to facilitate any kind of trade-in program through the retailers.

Tim then assisted me in filing a formal complaint with Toshiba over the phone.

It’s been just about 3 months since the purchase and about 1 month since my initial contact with Toshiba before receiving any semi-meaningful response.

I have a feeling that Best Buy will not have any desire to help, or maybe they’ll do some kind of lame $100 trade-in towards a Blu-Ray player. But with Blu-Ray players going UP in price now, this whole situation really is a big 4-Q to everybody.

Is there enough separation between Toshiba, the retailers, and the movie production companies that they can continually pass the buck and say no one is to blame for bilking consumers out of hundreds of dollars? Or, is there enough tie-in between Toshiba’s multi-million dollar ad campaign (Super Bowl commercials) and their soon-after discontinuation of the product that someone could come up with a class action lawsuit? If they knew the boat was sinking, it would benefit them to get as many people to buy prior to D-date to minimize their losses.

Called Maria Rappoli (973-628-8000 ext. 4250) at Toshiba Customer Support for the fourth time today and left a message, as directed by the Toshiba customer support e-mail response. I have yet to hear back from her.

Thanks for screwing my family out of $500. Let’s see if I can help drum up some Internet justice. Consumerist.com, any suggestions?

If you’ve bought an overpriced HD-DVD player in the last 6 months and feel cheated, please feel free to give Maria a call. She sounds like she may be a nice person, if I ever get her on the phone.

Will Best Buy follow their lead (if it is true)?

And yeah, still no word from Toshiba. Time to call again.

DreamWorks is still HD DVD exclusive, according to this article at Reuters. Interesting. They’re waiting for a response from Toshiba, much like I am.

I wonder what the chances are that Toshiba will say “Hey, release it on Blu-Ray. We’ve got a player coming out next month.”
